Horseshoe Mustache: How to Unleash Your Inner Hulk Hogan

No mustache is as instantly recognizable as the horseshoe. Popular among bikers, badasses, and, well, Hulk Hogan, this symbol of machismo isn't for the fainthearted. Reminiscent of the curved handlebars on a Harley Davidson, this mustache blends the classic cowboy with some good ol' rock 'n' roll.

Thinking of trying it out? You're in luck. The Horseshoe Mustache remains one of the staples of facial hair. Perfect for those who like nothing more than chugging a cold beer and driving down the open road. If that's a little too much freedom, then it's not for you.

What is a Horseshoe Mustache?

Running from chin to chin in one unbroken and beautiful arc, the Horseshoe Mustache is characterized by an upside-down U-shape. It includes the mustache itself but also the longer sides that continue the hair all the way to your jawline.

It's not hard to understand the name – it looks just like a horseshoe. But others have compared it to the handlebars of a motorcycle.

The Horseshoe is nothing new. It goes back to the Wild West when cowboys and outlaws adopted this masculine look. Then, like most mustache trends, it faded away only to reemerge in the '70s on another group of outlaws and renegades: bikes and wrestlers.

Famous biker gangs like the Hell's Angels differentiated themselves by their impressive mustache – completed with the signature bandana. It was a look that Hulk Hogan was more than happy to adopt.

Horseshoe Mustache Styles

Classic Horseshoe Mustache

This style is a straight homage to the '70s, reflecting the era's love for bold and prominent facial hair. The Classic Horseshoe is thick and full, running along the upper lip and extending down past the corners of the mouth to the jawline in a distinct U-shape. It's perfect for those aiming to channel their inner Hulk Hogan or a Wild West cowboy vibe.

Modern Horseshoe Mustache

A sleeker take on the traditional design, the Modern Horseshoe trims down the width and density for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Ideal for the man who appreciates the classic shape but prefers a more refined and less imposing style. This version suits a variety of face shapes and is more adaptable to formal environments.

Trimmed Horseshoe Mustache

For those who favor subtlety, the Trimmed Horseshoe offers a more understated version of the classic. It maintains the iconic U-shape but with shorter, more meticulously trimmed sides that don't extend too far down the jawline. This style is excellent for maintaining a balance between rugged charm and neatness.

Horseshoe Fu Manchu Mustache

Merging the Horseshoe with the dramatic flair of a Fu Manchu, this style features the traditional U-shape paired with longer, downward-extended tips at the ends of each side. The Horseshoe Fu Manchu is a striking choice, offering an exotic twist on the classic Horseshoe and is sure to turn heads.

Biker Horseshoe Mustache

This version amplifies the rebellious spirit associated with bikers and '70s counterculture icons. The Biker Horseshoe is typically thicker and more pronounced, often accompanied by a soul patch or other facial hair elements. It's a powerful expression of freedom and non-conformity, resonating with those who live on the edge.

Blended Horseshoe Mustache

The Blended Horseshoe integrates seamlessly with sideburns or a beard, offering a harmonious yet bold facial hair statement. This style is versatile, allowing for various degrees of thickness and length, adapting to different hair growth patterns and personal preferences. It's perfect for those who want a strong mustache presence without completely separating it from other facial hair.

How to Grow a Horseshoe Mustache

Okay. The Horseshoe Mustache is pretty cool. It's thick, a little rugged around the edges, and is sure to get you recognized. It's what we call a statement mustache – the statement being "Kick ass and ask questions later."

The problem is that most men are a little nervous when it comes to growing one. Do you grow an entire beard first? When do you begin shaping the U? And how long should the mustache be?

Let's go through the process step-by-step:

What You'll Need

To grow a horseshoe mustache, you'll need:

  • Electric Trimmer
  • Trimming Scissors
  • Mustache Comb
  • Beard Oil
  • Mustache Wax

What To Do

Like all good mustaches, it starts by doing nothing – you've got to let your hair grow wild and free. Unlike other mustaches, it's not just the hair on your upper lip that's allowed to grow; you'll want to let your full beard grow.

Some people opt to keep their cheeks trimmed during this growth phase. However, it can look a little odd – it's better to just grow your entire beard for 4 – 6 weeks before using your trimmer.

  1. Define Your Lines. The first step involves using your electric trimmer to broadly define the edges of the mustache. That means creating a straight line on either side of your mouth. You want to leave a thick band of hair that reaches your chin.
  2. Remove Excess Hair. All the hair below the jawline and either side of the mustache needs to be removed. Alternatively, you can let this stay as stubble, giving yourself an awesome beardstache.
  3. Tidy Up with Scissors. Use your trimming scissors and comb to tidy up the edges, achieving the classic U-shape. There are no hard and fast rules regarding the mustache. Some men prefer to keep it above their upper lip; others let it grow over the edge a little. It all depends on your desired look.
  4. Apply Mustache Wax and Beard Oil. Beard oil is designed to hydrate and soften the hair. It'll give it a shiner, healthier appearance. The mustache wax gives your mustache a superior hold – perfect if you're planning to ride into the wind.

The big question is what to do about the soul patch. You can just trim it off; however, leaving it adds a little extra flavor and depth to this classic look.

You'll want to wash and trim your mustache a few times a week. Don't use your standard shampoo – a specialized beard shampoo is crucial to stop your hair from drying out and split ends from forming.
