Manscaping. Pubic hair shaving. It's not something your Dad really teaches you. That leaves most men pursuing two options: wild and woolly, or totally clean-shaven (with all the itchiness that follows). But those aren't the only options — and there's a lot more to shaving pubic than most men understand.

Shaving downstairs can go right or very wrong. Nipping yourself hurts — a lot — and can cause bleeding. While shaving completely leads to the dreaded red bump rash and days of itching. And that's without even talking about shaving your sack.

Below, we're not shying away from the awkward topic. Beard Sorcery might focus most on men's chins, but today we're going below the belt.

Why Consider Shaving Your Pubic Hair?

If you're considering shaving or trimming your pubic hair, you're not alone. A 2023 US survey of over 1,000 men found that almost half had removed their pubes at one point — nearly 30% had done so in the previous 30 days.

Gay and bisexual men were the most likely to groom downstairs. But that's probably because they're more honest with their partners. Women's preferences are quite predictable.

In a 2021 survey, they said:

  • 51% of women disliked men who remove all their pubic hair — 30% really hated it.
  • 41% did like it if the pubic hair was "very short."

The conclusion? Don't let it go wild — keep it trimmed anywhere from mid-length to quite short. This is topiary, not mowing the lawn.

How to Shave Pubic Hair

Before you grab your razor, take a minute to plan your approach. The last thing you want to do is screw it up — especially if you've got a date around the corner or a partner who'll be a little shocked.

Remember: it's not the same as shaving your face. The skin is thicker, the hair is coarser, and the angles are just damn awkward.

Here's how to get it right from start to finish:

1. Trim the Area First

Start by trimming your pubic hair down to a short, manageable length with scissors or a trimmer. This makes the next steps easier and helps you see the natural shape. Even if you're not going for full pubic hair removal, trimming gives a neater, cleaner appearance.

2. Soften with Warm Water

Take a warm shower or bath before you shave. This helps soften the hair and relax the skin, making pubic hair shaving smoother and less likely to cause irritation.

3. Apply Shaving Gel or Cream

Use a fragrance-free shaving gel designed for sensitive areas. This reduces friction and helps the razor glide evenly. Avoid body washes or soaps, which can dry out the skin.

4. Shape the Hairline

Most men prefer to shape rather than completely shave their pubic hair. Use gentle, short strokes along the sides and upper edges to define your natural line. Shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize redness and razor bumps.

5. Rinse and Moisturise

Rinse thoroughly with cool water, then pat dry. Finish with an alcohol-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel to calm the skin and prevent itching.

Want a completely smooth finish?

Follow the same routine, but shave in the direction of hair growth first, then carefully against it for a closer result. This is full pubic hair removal for men — just make sure to moisturize and exfoliate regularly to avoid ingrown hairs.

How to Shave Your Balls

Shaving your pubic hair is one thing — taking the razor to your scrotum (the sac holding your testicles) is quite another. It's not a simple job. You can often get a lot of the longer hairs with an electric razor, but for a more thorough job, you're going to need some tips.

Here's what to do:

  • Apply a healthy covering of shaving gel. You want your scrotum to be moist and slick, minimizing the risk of nicking the kit.
  • Lift your leg up. It can be difficult to access your balls. Lifting one leg and putting it on a stool or bathtub can help a lot.
  • Keep the skin taut. There's nothing more important than this. You want to glide the shaver in the direction of hair growth over the taut skin.
  • Rinse and moisturise. As with elsewhere, give the area a thorough rinse afterward and apply some cooling aftershave or lotion to prevent ingrown hairs and itching.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Pubic hair shaving doesn't end when you put the razor down. You'll want to keep the area clean and dry for 24 hours.

No heavy sweating, tight underwear, or direct friction. That's a recipe for red rash city. Also, exfoliate the area gently twice a week to prevent ingrown hairs. Apply a light moisturizer daily or use a light, fragrance-free lotion.

Once you've done your first major trim, it's mostly just upkeep. Give it a trim every 1-2 weeks to tidy things up. Otherwise, you're done — it's not like your beard, where constant trimming and oiling are necessary.
