Which States Grow the Most Facial Hair?

From the iconic chinstrap of Abe Lincoln to Teddy Roosevelt's legendary mustache, facial hair isn't just a trend—it's a riveting chapter in America's cultural saga. This isn't merely about the modern-day hipster flaunting a meticulously groomed beard. Oh no, it's far broader and deeper.

Facial hair weaves through the diverse tapestry of American subcultures, embodying traditions and styles that are as varied as the country itself.

But amidst this whiskered wonderland, a burning question arises: Which state claims the crown for cultivating the most facial hair? And within this realm of bristles and beards, what style reigns supreme?

In this article:

  • Which States Grow the Most Facial Hair?
  • What is the Most Popular Beard Style State By State?

Which States Grow the Most Facial Hair?

According to GQ, who polled 500 barbers and hairstylists across America, the most bearded states were:

  1. Virginia (58%)
  2. Montana (55%)
  3. Kansas (53%)

The poll revealed that, on average, 35% of American men rock a beard. However, in these three states, commitment to beardliness is sky-high, with over half the male population showing off their follicular fabulousness.

But what about the mustache? Well, the same survey found that mustaches weren't overwhelmingly common in any US state. Nonetheless, three states kept a stiff and hairy upper lip:

  1. Oregan (45%)
  2. Nevada (43%)
  3. North Carolina (42%)

Google ‘mustaches in Carolina', and you'll find the Facebook page for The Official Beard and Mustache Club of North Carolina. You'll also come across a rather disturbing Urban Dictionary entry. Don't say we didn't warn you!!!

Lastly, there are the heathens who refuse to worship at the altar of beardliness. These clean-shaven scoundrels are found throughout the US. But they're found in the highest concentration in Idaho, Michigan, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Delaware. Maryland, interestingly, is sandwiched between the most clean-shaven state, Delaware, and the most bearded state, Virginia. Talk about a hairy situation!

What is the Most Popular Beard Style State By State?

Okay. So, we've separated the beards from the bare cheeks. But what kinds of beards can we expect to find throughout the fifty states?

Here, we turn to the invaluable (and much-needed) work by Black Tux. Using Google Trends data, they looked for search patterns for 18 different kinds of beards, from the full beard to the ducktail. What did they find?

Surprisingly, the goatee is America's number 1 beard style, ranking top in 15 states. It was followed by the mustache in 10 states and the full beard in 5 states. If we split America into four regions, only the West prefers the mustache. Everywhere else, the goatee reigns supreme.

Nonetheless, there are a few unusual results. California, for example, inexplicably spends its time searching for chin curtain beards (think Abraham Lincoln or the Amish). Meanwhile, Florida man is a big fan of the pencil mustache.

In a band of beard weirdness, North Dakota loves some good ol' stubble, and Minnesota is all about the toothbrush mustache (yes, that's the Hitler mustache – we don't understand it either). Dropping down into Illinois, we find the yeard, followed by the ducktail in neighboring Indiana.

Then there's a ton of praise for the Fun Man Chu mustache in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Seriously, what's going on in the Midwest!!!

Other notable mentions include:

  • Kansas and the Soul Patch
  • New York and the French Fork
  • Virginia and the Van Dyke Beard
  • Texas and the Hollywoodian
