What is No-Shave November? And Why Did It Start?

November – it's more than cold, drizzly nights and the run-up to Christmas. It's a chance to take a hiatus from shaving to grow your facial hair for a good cause.

No-Shave November, or Movember, isn't just a quirky internet trend. It's a reputable charitable organization dedicated to supporting men's health issues. So, if you're thinking about growing your facial hair and donating to a good cause, I mustache you to keep reading. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself).

What is No-Shave November?

No-Shave November, or Movember, is precisely what it sounds like. For thirty days, people taking part in the month stop shaving, growing out their 'tache, beard, or whatever their follicles can muster.

Part of the event isn't just about not shaving; it's about raising awareness and funds for men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. The idea is to forgo shaving and grooming in order to evoke conversation and raise cancer awareness. Participants might also save the money they would typically spend on shaving and grooming to donate to cancer research and education.

However, it isn't some organic trend – No-Shave November and Movember are respected charitable organizations.

Why Did No-Shave November Start?

The two organizations behind the hairy month aren't linked – though they share a common theme. Both charities work to raise awareness and funds for men's issues.

Kickstarted in Melbourne in 2003, Movember is the global movement turning mustaches into a statement for men's health. What began as a fun idea among friends has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon, championing the fight against prostate and testicular cancer, along with mental health and suicide prevention. With over 5 million supporters, Movember has funneled a whopping $994 million into health initiatives in just 17 years!

Born from a personal tragedy, No-Shave November, on the other hand, is the heartfelt campaign that's all about letting your hair down—literally. After losing their father to colon cancer, the Hill family launched this initiative in 2009 to spotlight cancer awareness and support. By ditching the razor and embracing the fuzz, participants echo the struggles of those battling cancer and funnel funds into vital research, raising over $10 million to date. It's not just a beard; it's a beacon of solidarity.

What are the No-Shave November Rules?

Okay. So, No-Shave November and Movember are charitable organizations that encourage men to grow their facial hair to support men's health issues. But what are the rules? And how do you take part?

Well, the rule is simple: stop shaving.

No-Shave November simply asks men to stop shaving any and all facial hair. You can officially register to participate via their website. Even better if you've got a group of friends. The charity lets you organize your own team, competing against others to see who can raise the most.

You'll unlock badges as you go – like the Anti-Razor badge or the Halfway There badge. It's a fun way to enjoy the month off shaving and celebrate your participation.

Movember, however, as the name suggests, only requires you to grow out your mustache. The name comes from a combination of "mustache" and "November." Like its counterpart, getting started is simple – sign up via their website, create a profile, and get growing. Your friends and family can make donations via the charity's purpose-built donation page.

Why Grow For November?

Participating in one of the two campaigns is a must for every man at least once in their life – even if it's just to see what you can grow in a month. Here's a handful of reasons to join in:

  1. Cancer Awareness: Participating in No-Shave November serves as a powerful, visual conversation starter about cancer, reminding people of the challenges cancer patients face, including hair loss due to treatment.
  2. Fundraising for Research: The money you save on grooming can be donated to support cancer research and education, contributing to advancements in prevention treatment and potentially saving lives.
  3. Solidarity with Patients: Letting your hair grow wild and free symbolizes solidarity with cancer patients, many of whom lose their hair during treatment, fostering a sense of community and support.
  4. Foster Community: Joining No-Shave November connects you with a global community committed to health and wellness, providing a sense of belonging and collective action towards a common goal.
