Mustache Gaps: How to Fix the Mustache Split

Whether you're growing a full beard or a mustache, a mustache gap might be all that stands between you and perfection. Some people might advise you to give up growing a mustache – or the Amish will tell you mustaches just aren't worth bothering.

We disagree.

First of all, mustache gaps are completely normal. In fact, they're essential for certain mustache styles. And second, there are tons of things you can do to cover up the gap.

What is a Mustache Gap?

The mustache gap refers to the lower density of hair in the philtrum area – the region between your nose and upper lip. Most men see a little less hair growth in this area. Usually, that's not a problem. However, in some men, it can be quite a defined gap.

Part of the problem depends on the size of your philtrum. People with a smaller philtrum will have a less noticeable gap. But, if it's a little larger, then your hair growth can be sparser than the Sahara Desert.

What Causes a Mustache Gap

Cursing your mustache gap? We know your pain. However, understanding the underlying cause can help you fix the problem. We've already identified one culprit – your philtrum size. Consider these other factors:

  • Genetics: Your DNA sets the blueprint for your hair growth. If your family tree has a history of sparse upper-lip hair, chances are you'll sport a natural gap, too.
  • Hormonal Levels: Testosterone and DHT are the engines behind facial hair growth. If these hormones are on the lower side, your stache might grow slower or develop patchy areas.
  • Age: Patience is key! Younger men often see gaps in their mustaches that gradually fill in as they age and their facial hair thickens.
  • Scarring or Skin Conditions: Old acne scars, injuries, or skin issues like alopecia areata can permanently block hair growth in the affected areas.
  • Stress and Nutrition: High stress levels can temporarily disrupt hair growth cycles, while a lack of essential nutrients like biotin, zinc, or iron can weaken your hair's ability to grow fully.

Sometimes, the hair isn't even that sparse – it's all about the direction. If the hair grows away from the philtrum at an angle, it can accentuate the appearance of a gap when there really isn't one.

Ultimately, having a mustache gap isn't the end of the world. We say embrace it – or do something about it. Don't mind the gap!

How to Fix a Mustache Gap

Minimizing your mustache gap isn't as hard as it sounds. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can achieve a more even appearance. Try these techniques out:

Grow It Thicker

Most mustaches and beards look a little patchy at first. But, as the hair continues to grow, the patches fade away – you've got to persevere. Give your mustache time to thicken up and grow out. After around three to six months of growth, you can make a genuine assessment.

During this time, you should see the gap begin to close. Of course, it may never completely disappear. However, for the majority of men, it'll be much less noticeable than before.

If you're still seeing a gap, you can promote additional hair growth by massaging the area, using beard oil to support each strand, and applying a derma-roller (microneedling). This latter option promotes hair stimulation, increasing the density of hair in the region.

Darken Your Mustache

The hairs on your philtrum can appear a little light. By darkening the mustache, the gap appears less pronounced. It's a simple yet highly effective trick.

Darkening your mustache doesn't have to mean cracking out the hair dye. Temporary solutions like a beard pen let you draw in parts of your mustache to make it look fuller.

Just Go For It

There's a bunch of mustache gap styles. We say, go for it. You could try a Pencil mustache, a Handlebar with a twist, or a variation of the Chevron. Turn your genetic quirk into your biggest asset.

Just look at celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio – he has an extremely defined mustache gap. But it hasn't stopped him from rocking all kinds of facial hair. Nor does anyone talk about Johnny Depp's mustache gap –trust me, it's there. With the right style, nobody is going to notice your gap.

Thin Out Your Mustache

If the rest of your mustache is thicker than the gap, you've got two options:

  1. Increase the thickness of the gap.
  2. Decrease the thickness of the rest of your mustache

The second option is much easier to achieve. Going for something like a Pencil mustache allows you to have a defined, distinguished look without emphasizing the gap. If you're not interested in thick mustaches like the Chevron or Walrus, it's the best option.

Boost Your Testosterone

Testosterone is the fuel behind your facial hair growth. Therefore, logically, if you increase your T levels, you'll see faster and thicker growth (at least before your 30s). Increasing testosterone levels is as simple as getting a good night's sleep, avoiding processed foods, losing excess fat, practicing competitive sports, lifting weights, and eating a nutritious diet rich in zinc, magnesium, and boron.
