Marvel vs. DC: The Best Bearded Comic Book Heroes - Part 1

Hulking titans. Slick assassins. Magical mystics. Comic books are filled with all manner of crazed and colorful characters. It's why we love them. But there's one thing often missing: beards. The Big Three characters: Superman, Batman, and Spiderman, are all fresh-faced.

But why?

Well, for one thing, a beard is a pretty big giveaway when trying to hide your identity. But wait, I hear you say, doesn't a beard cover your face. That's true. But the style and color of your beard are also kind of unique. Do you think Bruce Wayne and Batman wouldn't get mixed up if they both rocked an epic beard? Meanwhile, no one wants a beard under Spiderman's mask. Talk about musty!

That's not to say there aren't bearded comic book characters. There are loads. But who's got the greatest facial fuzz? And which comic book house has the best-bearded characters: Marvel or DC?

Thor

Little surprise that the Norse God of Thunder sports a legendary beard… he's already legendary himself. Based on Viking mythology, Thor's character design draws upon the various beards types, including adding a little beard bling.

If we're going by the movies, then we've got to talk about "Fat Thor's" thundering, plaited beard. Whatever you think about Thor stacking on the pounds, you best not complain about that beauty!

Wolverine

Come on! It's a classic look. In fact, we're thinking of launching a petition to rename mutton chops the Wolverine. While few people can pull off such an audacious look, Hugh Jackman and his comic book counterpart do it in style. But then again, Hugh Jackman could probably bring chin curtains back into fashion.

Green Arrow

Inspired by Robin Hood, there's no way this hooded hero was ever going to be fresh-faced. Yet, his signature trim mustache and pointed beard has a touch of the Van Dyke – very Three Musketeers. If you're looking for a strong beard – this is one of the best DC has to offer.

Nick Fury

In the Ultimate comics, the once white Nick Fury was redesigned to look more like the badass Samuel L. Jackson: circle beard included. The result: one of the most hard-hitting and engaging character designs around. It's just lucky they managed to bag Jackson for the films too.

Effortlessly cool with an air of danger, this is the benchmark for all circle beards. Period.

Doctor Strange

Another circle beard on the list, this time from the Master of the Mystic Arts himself. If you thought Fury's character design was iconic, just take a look at the Sorcerer Supreme. His goatee is a little awkward but with a refined touch. Perfect for the arrogant intellectual turned magical messiah.

Superman – That one time

We need to talk about Superman. According to canon, Superman shaves using his heat vision and a mirror. But he doesn't always have his trusty-looking glass to hand. That's when we see his glorious beard. Appearing in numerous additions and a couple of onscreen clips, Superman's beard is a thing of beauty. Thick, lustrous, and deep velvety black. Ok… we might be getting a little carried away.

But seriously. Is beard-growing yet another superpower he's been hiding away? Are the Kryptonians famed for being hirsute hunks? We don't know. But damn, we want to find out.

Who wins?

This one's a slam dunk for Marvel. Whether it's their more grounded approach or they just love beards, tons of Marvel characters sport incredible beards!

That just leaves one question: what's your problem with beards DC? Seriously!
