How to Prepare Your Beard for Special Occasions

Unlike most fashion styles, beards aren't something you can easily change or hide – not if you don't want to erase months of work. Piercings can be removed; tattoos hidden under clothing; even a quirky hairstyle can be tamed for an all-important job interview.

Though beards aren't anything to be ashamed of!

But when it comes to some of life's landmark occasions – job interviews or first dates – you want to ensure your beard is presentable and appropriate. While some companies (and partners) have strict rules against beards, most will be happy enough so long as it's well-groomed and maintained.

A little prep work goes a long way. Below we're delving into how to prepare your beard for special occasions, from trimming to products.

How to prepare your beard for special occasions

Job interview

After the COVID-19 lockdowns ended, a whole lot of men began asking the same question: "do I need to shave my beard for job interviews?" Having spent the previous year or so growing out their glorious facial fuzz, many men were loathed to apply the trimmer.

So, should you?

Mostly, it depends. Some companies take a strict "no beards" approach to their workspace. (The New York Yankees, for instance, ban all facial hair, except an immaculately groomed mustache.) However, with an uptick in beard fashion in recent years, the majority of employers will not dictate what you can and can't do with your follicles.

You'll want to do a little bit of research, therefore, to find out your company's stance on beards – LinkedIn is a fantastic place to start.

Where companies are more stringent is in the level of grooming; beards should be well kept, well groomed, and hygienic. That's the absolute basics!

We recommend going for a shorter beard – e.g., a ducktail, a balbo, a boxed beard – and keeping it shampooed, brushed and oiled. Make sure there are no lone hairs or scruffy patches.

First dates

First dates are already daunting: What to wear? What to talk about? Where to meet? But your beard should also get some consideration. As a rule, the more eccentric your beard, the more likely your date isn't going to like it.

That's not a golden rule, however. Some women and guys do like particular beard styles, and if you win the statistical jackpot, then good for you!

According to the research, short stubble is the most attractive beard type – 38% of women between ages 25 to 34 said so. Meanwhile, clean-shaven was the most popular look among younger women aged 18 to 24 (38%), and the full beard was most sought-after by older women (33%).

Differences are also cultural. Japanese women, for instance, take a strong stance against beards, with 85% preferring the clean-shaven look.

Gay men, however, appear to love beards – finding "thicker facial hair" more attractive.

Nevertheless, like for the job interview, your primary goal should be to have a clean, odor-free, and well-groomed beard. Oiling the beard is a must, as is trimming and shampooing your facial fuzz. Oh, and when eating, remember to wipe away any food or drink on your beard with a napkin.

Dental Appointments

Okay, okay… it's not much of a special occasion, but it is an important consideration. Letting anyone that close to your face means giving your beard a thorough inspection beforehand. You'll want to balm or wax your beard to keep it in place and ensure it's thoroughly shampooed and conditioned – no odors here!

Final thoughts

No matter whether it's a regular day or you've got a major occasion, your beard should always be well-groomed. That means using beard shampoo and conditioner twice a week. You'll also want to apply beard oil – to nourish the hairs – daily or on alternate days.

By sticking to a beard care routine, you'll never receive any strange glances or stares; and you'll be ready for whatever life throws at you.
