12 Best Mustache Styles for 2025

Once upon a time, everyone had a mustache – or at least all the really cool people. It was the sign of either a rugged outdoorsman or a distinguished gentleman. Then, in the 20th century, mustaches dropped off the radar. Only a few people clung to the time-honored tradition – Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot, and Freddy Mercury, to name a few.

Yet, mustaches are making a comeback.

The only problem is we’ve forgotten most of the classic mustache styles. Aside from a few handlebars and a few standard ‘taches, most men don’t take the time to groom their upper lip. It’s time for that to change.

Give these mustache styles a try in 2025. Let’s reclaim the stache.

Best Mustache Styles to Try This Year

1. The Chevron

The Chevron is the ultimate no-nonsense mustache. It covers the entire upper lip, ending in a slightly upside-down V shape that hangs over the upper lip. Named after the Chevron logo, it should be renamed the Tom Selleck.

Requiring minimal grooming and maximizing your masculinity, this is a mustache that isn’t trying to be anything else. Forget having a few flimsy stands of hair; go all in on the Chevron.

2. The Walrus

Tell me Sam Elliot isn’t cool. The man is a living legend. And it’s a well-known fact that Sam stores 85% of his coolness in his mustache (the last 15% is in his vocal cords). The Walrus gets its name because of its thick, voluminous shape that resembles a walrus’s whiskers. Swamping the upper lip, it’s like the Chevron but dialed up to 11.

The other notable Walrus aficionados are the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and former President Teddy Roosevelt. Talk about legendary company.

3. The Horseshoe

Popular with bikers and badasses, the Horseshoe is for men who shoot first and take questions later. The Horseshoe is simple – it’s an upside-down U that extends from the chin around the mouth. (Or just take a circle beard and shave off the chin part.)

Instantly recognizable, it’s seen something of a resurgence among athletes. Just check out Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco.

4. The Pencil

Fancy yourself something of a leading man? Well, in the 1930s and 40s, everyone who was anybody had a pencil mustache. Today, it’s probably most famous as the mustache style Brad Pitt sported in Inglorious Basterds.

Think of it as a thin line directly above the upper lip and spanning the length of the mouth. Because of its thin nature, it’s best worn by people with black or dark brown hair. It takes quite a bit of grooming – however, if you’re after that debonair with a hint of dastardly look, this is the mustache for you.

5. The Beard-Stache

Something of a personal favorite, the Beard-Stache is a combination of a beard and mustache. (Shocking, I know!) Usually, the beard part is mostly stubble. As for the mustache, you can try any variation.

Henry Cavill went for a standard Chevron. But, if you’re feeling adventurous, it pairs well with everything from a Walrus to a Handlebar. And, best of all, it’s pretty easy to maintain.

6. The Handlebar

Probably the most famous mustache on the planet. Nothing is more impressive than a thick mustache twirling upwards at the ends. You’ll need a lot of wax and a lot of twisting to get the finished look. However, when you finally achieve perfection, it’s a pretty impressive style.

Don’t worry – you don’t have to be a barista or behind the counter at the latest trendy bar to enjoy this mustache. It’s the ultimate statement piece.

7. The English

Something of a variation of the Handlebar – the only difference is the ends point out the sides. Once reserved for the English aristocracy, it’s now pretty rare among the general public. That means it’s long overdue for a comeback.

Plus, with the ends already grown out, you can switch between the different Handlebar styles without any issue.

8. The Hungarian

Like the secret lovechild of the Handlebar and the Walrus (now that’s a title for a children’s book), the Hungarian was once the favorite mustache of Hungarian elite. (Back in the days of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand.)

The Hungarian is the biggest and boldest of the Handlebar mustache family. But, despite its namesake, it was pretty popular in the Wild West. Legendary figures like Wyatt Earp and Seth Bullock donned this tache.

Growing it requires a little more hair than a standard Handlebar. It curves a little more naturally and sits lower on the face.

9. The Imperial

Don’t confuse the Imperial with a standard Handlebar. Rather than the gentle upward tilt of a Handlebar, the Imperial points straight upward at the ends. There’s also less of a defined point. It’s about achieving a slightly more natural appearance.

Named after Kaiser Wilhelm II (the last German Emperor and King of Prussia), it’s a bold statement stache. It pairs beautifully with one of those helmets with the points on top.

10. The Toothbrush

Nobody knows why this mustache style went the way of the dodo. Popular among Hollywood stars like Charlie Chaplin, it disappeared almost overnight sometime around 1945. (It’s a real mystery!)

The Toothbrush involves a small section of hair just above the upper lip with the sides shaved off. If you’re thinking of growing this mustache… just don’t. Maybe in another 80 years, it’ll recover its reputation; for now… the less said, the better.

11. The Fu Manchu

The Fu Manchu is named for… well, Dr. Fu Manchu. It’s the most stereotypical East Asian mustache. Consisting of two tendrils of hair that hang on either side of the mouth and below the chin, it’s a questionable style choice.

Probably not the style you want for everyday wear – however, if you’re already rocking a Horseshoe, it’s only a few weeks of growth to try it out.

12. The Dali

The Dali is basically the Fu Manchu – just upside-down. Made famous by the wild and adventurous artist Salvador Dali, his mustache reflected the surreal nature of his work. It’s like a standard Handlebar that keeps on growing and growing.

It’ll take a long while to get enough hair to grow the Dali. Yet, for the bold and the brave who battle through, the results are simply astounding.
